Common questions

What does the app store about my child?

Nickname and animal symbol, XP, streak, medals, mastery level per category, the review cards, which words the child has met, an optional four-digit code, and the device settings. All of it on the device. On the free tier there is no account and no server, so none of it leaves the device. The app never asks for the child's full name, age, date of birth, email address or location.

Who is the voice reading the words?

Nobody. The narrating voice is computer-generated speech, made with Microsoft Azure AI Speech before the app was published. We say so because Microsoft's terms require it, and because they explicitly ask that parents be told when a product is aimed at children. The clips sit as files inside the app; the app never calls Microsoft while in use. If you would rather have your family's own voice, every single audio file can be replaced — see the project README.

What happens if the subscription lapses?

Nothing the child has achieved disappears. Medals, XP, streak, review and mastery stay exactly as they are, and the ten free categories keep working, indefinitely. The categories outside the free tier become unavailable — they are not shown with a padlock in the child's interface, they are simply not there. Your account remains, so a new purchase returns access at once. The app also has a 14-day grace window for devices with no signal, so the drive to Kosovo does not lock the app.

How do I move a child to a new device?

On the free tier the progress does not follow automatically, because there is no account to sync through. You can carry it across by hand: For parents → 🔐 Your data → ⬇️ Download your data gives you a file with everything. With the full version and an account, progress follows the child between iPad, phone and PC by itself. The four-digit code never travels — it lives on the device, and has to be set again there.

My child does not read yet. Does the app still work?

Yes. In the parent area there is a switch, “👂 Does not read yet”. With it on, Dëgjo — the listening mode — becomes the direction that counts towards a medal, with exactly the same thresholds as otherwise, and the app starts there instead of in a quiz full of writing. The medals count the same as everyone else's. When the child starts to read, you switch it off, and the medals stay.

Why are the words different from the schoolbook?

Because the app teaches Kosovar Gheg — the language as the family speaks it at home. Grandmother is “nona”, not “gjyshja”. Each card has room for the standard form alongside, as a written reference, so the child recognises it in the diaspora book and at school in Kosovo. That form never gets audio; it is the Gheg that is read aloud.

Does the app work offline?

Yes. All 999 words, 186 sentences, 1216 recordings and 999 drawings are inside the app from the first launch. Nothing is downloaded along the way, and the app is complete in flight mode. The web version needs to be opened once with a connection; after that it works offline too.

Several children on one device?

Yes. Each child picks themselves on the start screen, with a name and an animal. To protect a profile from an older sister, you give it a four-digit code in Admin. The code lives only on the device, and we never store it — not even as a hash. The price is honest: on a new device the profile is unlocked until an adult sets a code there too.

Are there adverts or tracking in the app?

No, and that is not a temporary state. There is no advertising SDK, no analytics tool, no third-party crash reporting and no advertising ID anywhere in the dependency tree. The web version has a Content-Security-Policy that makes it practically impossible for the app to call a third party even if someone tried.

What does it cost?

Ten word categories and ten sentence categories — 180 words and 126 sentences — are free forever, together with the whole alphabet, the medals, the review and the mission of the day. The full version opens the rest for every child in the house, on all their devices. The price is set per market and shown by the store itself, not here: a number on this page would be wrong in Switzerland the same day it was written.

Can I print something for the class?

Yes. The app makes word cards (double-sided A4, picture and Albanian on the front, translation on the back), a word list for one category, and a certificate with name and date. It happens in the browser on your own device, with no server and no PDF service, and it works on a school iPad too.

Something is broken. What first?

Tap 🔄 Update on the start screen. It clears the cache and fetches the newest build; progress is untouched. If that does not help, write to us with the device, the browser and the version number at the bottom of the start screen.
