Why this app exists

No app in the world teaches Gheg. Duolingo, Mondly, Drops, Gus on the Go and Studycat have no Albanian at all — not even standard Albanian.

An estimated 95–98 % of children of Albanian heritage in Germany get no Albanian instruction. In Switzerland the figure is around 3 %. Where a Saturday school exists nearby, roughly 30 % attend.

The problem is the distance, not the interest.

So the competitor is not another app. It is the Saturday school the family cannot get to — the one 40 minutes away, at ten on a Saturday, with two other children in the car.

About the numbers

That Duolingo, Mondly, Drops, Gus on the Go and Studycat have no Albanian was checked against the providers' own course lists on 10 August 2026. That no app teaches Gheg is a negative claim: it has been checked for the five largest, and it cannot be proved exhaustively.

That 5 % of diaspora children receive Albanian instruction — 25,000 pupils across 19 countries — comes from Radio Evropa e Lirë, April 2019.

The figures of 95–98 % for Germany, around 3 % for Switzerland and around 30 % attendance where a school exists are our own estimates. They have not been checked against an official source, and they are labelled as estimates here because that is what they are.

What the app is

  • Gheg, not the schoolbook

    The Albanian is Kosovar Gheg — the way the family speaks, not the way the schoolbook writes.

  • Offline

    Every word, picture and recording is inside the app from the first launch. Nothing is downloaded along the way. It works in the car towards Prishtina, on the plane, and in the village with one bar of signal.

  • Six ways to practise

    Cards, to meet the word. Picture → Word and Word → Picture, the two that earn a medal. Dëgjo, for the child who does not read yet. “Say it out loud”, the only mode where the child has to produce language. And spelling.

  • The mission of the day

    One little mission a day happens away from the screen: say something in Albanian to somebody at home. Nobody checks it.

  • Honest progress

    A medal takes 70 % in both counting quiz directions. Pure guessing averages 55 %. Behind a parent gate there is a progress report that says what the child actually knows, what has not stuck, and how long ago it was — including when the answer is uncomfortable.

  • On paper

    Word cards, word list and a certificate print straight from the app, with no server and no subscription. The Saturday schools have no budgets and one printer.

The app has 999 words, 186 sentences and 1216 recordings. This is a taste of the free tier, not of what costs money.

Ten categories free forever

180 words, 126 sentences, the whole alphabet, medals, review and the mission of the day. No account, no adverts, no time limit.

This is not a trial. The categories outside the free tier do not appear in the child's interface at all — no padlocks, no prices, nothing to nag about. Norwegian marketing law § 20 forbids purchase appeals directed at children, and we have gone stricter than the rule.

The medals, the XP and the streak belong to the child. They stay whatever happens to the subscription.

Privacy, in plain words

  • No adverts. Ever.
  • No third-party tracking and no analytics tools.
  • The free tier has no account at all. A nickname is plenty — we never ask for the child’s full name, email or date of birth.
  • Without an account nothing leaves this device. With an account it is your email, the nickname and the progress that sit on a server in the EU (Frankfurt) — never the code, never the child’s full name.
  • The narrating voice is computer-generated speech (Microsoft Azure), not a person.

The app is finished, but it has not been submitted to the App Store and Google Play yet. Leave your email address and you will get one email the day it is there. Not a newsletter.

The address is used for one thing: that single message. We have no sign-up server — the button opens your own email client with a message ready to send, so you can see exactly what is sent and to whom. The lawful basis is your own request, GDPR Article 6(1)(f). The address is deleted once the message has gone out, and no later than 12 months after you wrote. You can ask to be removed from the list at any time.
